The Standing Desk and Shaking Things Up

I have back problems. I’ve had them for some time now. For the past couple of years it’s been concentrated in my lower back but since I’ve started sitting at a desk 8-9 hours a day the pain has crept up my back and is now hanging out right below my shoulders. My girlfriend tells me I need a standing desk (she has one at work) but I really want a Herman Miller. And because I’m starting to write these blogs more often, most likely a book deal will follow. So, I’ll be sitting down a lot more. I’ll probably end up going with Herman.

My girlfriend had her desk custom built. When it was installed at work she said she noticed something. People started stopping by her office to see this new-fangled contraption.

Why is she standing?

Where did she get the desk?

Can it even be considered a desk?

Are we all going to HAVE to stand?

What happened? She simply challenged the status quo. Not by much, mind you. But just enough that people took notice. Weird how that happens. Now, she didn’t get in trouble or anything. She just upset the schema. She did something unexpected that resulted in something different from the modus operandi (fancy). Simple as that.

Would this happen at your work? If you randomly decided to purchase a standing desk and have it installed by some of your friends what would happen? What would your “supervisor” do? Would any meetings be called? Would the desk have to be removed? Do you have the culture that would embrace a small change like that? Hopefully so.

However, if this isn’t the case, take heart. People that put thought into things like standing/sitting and stories like BLK are the ones whose brains obviously function a bit differently than the norm. Those people are more fun anyway. And you might be one of them… even if they just took your standing desk.

I don’t know the name of the CEO of my bank but I do know the name of the guy who made the computer I’m typing this on. Shake things up a bit.

P.S. If any of you know what Donald Miller sits in please let me know. He probably has a nice chair since he sits alot. Better yet, if you know Donald Miller, please let me know (you know, since we’re both writers and all). Also, do you know if Donald Miller is related to Herman Miller? I bet he could get me a good deal on that chair.
